High-performance cooling unit

IRS ICEcube PRO

IRS ICEcube PRO

The “IRS ICEcube PRO” media temperature control unit is a powerful, versatile device for precise temperature control of power electronic assemblies. It offers two independently controlled cooling circuits and is designed for demanding test bench applications – with a minimal footprint in a compact 19-inch format (12 U).

Technical highlights

  • Dual-circuit system for parallel operation of two devices under test (50l/min per cooling circuit) or combined high flow.
  • High cooling capacity: 15 kW at 10 K temperature difference.
  • Optional heating power: up to 12 kW.
  • Compact design: 19 inches, only 12 rack units.
  • Flexible coolant: water-glycol mixtures or fully demineralized or deionized water.
  • 40-liter tank volume for stable control.

Technical description

The unit stands out with its high nominal cooling capacity of 15 kW at a 10 Kelvin temperature difference between the device-under-test circuit and the facility water circuit, housed in a compact 19-inch format with just 12 rack units – ideal for applications with limited space and high power requirements at the same time. For active temperature control, up to 12 kW of heating power is also available on request.

Another technical highlight is the two cooling circuits within the IRS ICEcube PRO, which is only 12 rack units high, enabling parallel operation of two devices under test. Both circuits have a temperature- and flow-controlled supply. The flow control of the two circuits runs independently, while the temperature control acts on the shared tank volume of 40 liters across the whole unit. For applications that require higher flow, the cooling circuits can also be operated together, allowing flow rates of up to 60l/min.

All common liquids can be used as coolant: water-glycol mixtures and demineralized water are equally suitable for the unit.

The system is equipped with a bidirectional blow-out unit that allows a configurable draining process – duration, direction and pulsation can be set individually. The blow-out pressure can be precisely regulated via a manually adjustable compressed air service unit.

Each cooling circuit uses robust peripheral pumps that, depending on operating conditions, deliver up to 30 l/min flow per cooling circuit or alternatively up to 8 bar delivery pressure at 5 l/min flow – ideal for a wide range of test requirements.

The unit is operated either manually via a modern 10.1” touch display or via a web interface. Convenient remote control via the integrated Modbus/TCP or S7 interfaces is also possible. The system is optionally available with an external filling pump, which makes handling even easier.

Applications

  • Test benches for power electronics (e.g. inverters, e-motors)
  • Validation and end-of-line tests of traction inverters
  • Thermal stress tests with controlled cooling and heating
  • Research and development in automotive, industrial electronics, aeromotive,…
  • Integration and interfaces
  • Modbus/TCP for integration into test bench controllers
  • Siemens S7 interface for connection to a PLC
  • Web server for alternative operation and visualization
  • Further interfaces optional on request

Optionally, pH measurement and conductivity measurement can be integrated into the reservoir tank. These functions enable continuous monitoring of water quality, contributing to process reliability and extending the service life of the coolant.

Note: The actual cooling capacity depends strongly on the temperature spread between the facility water and the device-under-test circuit. A nominal capacity of 15 kW is typically easily achievable at a 10K temperature spread.
