Technical description
The IRS SiC Roadrunner is a compact Active Motor Load Emulator developed specifically for the requirements of modern inverters. With a maximum DC voltage of 950 V and a DC current of up to 600 A, the system simulates highly dynamic load profiles under realistic conditions. Thanks to a wide frequency spectrum – sine frequencies up to 4,000 Hz and switching frequencies up to 50 kHz – the Roadrunner is ideal for testing in electromobility, power electronics and the energy sector.
The simulated active power of the device under test is an impressive 558 kW.
Despite this enormous test power, the system requires a connected load of only about 16–20 kW and runs on a CEE three-phase supply 400 V / 32 A (other variants, e.g. for the US power grid, available on request).
An integrated cooling unit ensures efficient heat dissipation and also provides supply and return connections for cooling the device under test.
This means even extremely high-power tests can be run with minimal grid load and without external cooling infrastructure – a decisive advantage for laboratories with limited resources, with maximum cost efficiency thanks to low operating costs and no additional investment.
The emulator achieves an efficiency of 98.74 %. Almost all of the energy used goes into the simulation, while losses remain minimal.
The system is housed in a robust, mobile rack and offers compact connector systems for the high-voltage lines as well as standardized interfaces such as CAN and fiber optic communication (POF) for easy integration into existing test benches. The cooling circuits are easily accessible via supply and return connections. Operation is via an intuitive touch interface that clearly visualizes all operating states.
With its compact design, high performance and flexible configuration options, the IRS SiC Roadrunner is the ideal solution for demanding inverter tests in the smallest of spaces – with a connected load that is negligible compared to the simulated test power.
